Applied Outside Plant Design

In this unparalleled training class, you will learn elements common to all OSP projects, along with design techniques for underground, direct-buried and aerial cable plan applications.
You will have an opportunity to apply what you have learned through a series of design scenarios such as route design, media selection, planning, and cost estimation.

OSP 102 Course Information

Through attendance in this course you will learn the following:

  • Identify the components of an outside plant infrastructure
  • Identify outside plant pathways and spaces
  • Describe effective route designs for outside plants
  • Describe media solutions
  • Describe planning requirements for initial outside plant design
  • Identify the primary codes and standards associated with outside plant cable installation
  • Identify grounding and bonding requirements associated with OSP installatio
  • Locate requirements in project documentation, including an RFQ, scope of work, and other information typically established during a site and/or field survey
  • Identify underground, direct-buried, and aerial sections of a route
  • Describe the three primary cabling topologies and hybrid topologies
  • Identify special design considerations
  • Identify the minimum components of a maintenance plan
  • Identify the information that is needed to provide a cost estimate

This course is ideal for:

  • Current RCDDs looking to gain specialized information regarding outside plant design
  • Individuals preparing for the OSP Designer Exam
  • Technicians looking to advance in their career

OSP102 is designed for those who have a minimum of two years of experience in outside plant design and/or installation.

If you do not meet the experience requirements, BICSI strongly recommends that you complete the OSP101: Introduction to Outside Plant Design online course prior to enrolling in OSP102.

To successfully participate in our virtual classroom training, each attendee must have the following:

  • Laptop, desktop, or tablet that meet the system requirements. Click here for detailed requirements.
  • Microphone and speakers (headset recommended**)
  • Standalone webcams and/or mobile device camera for class activities.
  • Internet connection - 1 Mbps or better (broadband recommended) | 3G connection or better (WiFi recommended for VoIP audio)

Each attendee should bring a laptop or mobile device to class.

  • BICSI will ship the student workbook, used in the classroom, to the physical mailing address provided by each student.

Yes, you can earn 35 continuing education credits (CECs) toward an existing BICSI credential recertification requirement upon successfully completing this program.

Participation in all originally scheduled days of the program is mandatory in order to receive the certificate of completion and 33 CECs.

Participants who fulfill the attendance requirement will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the program. Please note that this is not the OSP Designer Certification, which requires a special exam application (apply by clicking on link below).

All students must purchase the ANSI/BICSI 002-2019 standard prior to attending class. If you have not already purchased it, click here to purchase today!

Note: In addition to this suggested manual, BICSI will also provide you with an activity workbook that gets shipped separately.

For this virtual class, additional classroom materials are shipped out at least two weeks prior to class for domestic students and four weeks for international students.  Please email tdo@bicsi.org and confirm your preferred shipping address for these additional materials.  You can expect delivery of two shipments – 1) a workbook, and 2) activity consumable materials.
Note: Installation students will also need to use a set of their own tools or have access to the tools listed here. More details can be found at bicsi.org/vct. If prospective students do not have access to these tools, we strongly recommend that they attend an in-person offering to get the full benefits of this program.

Because hands-on exams are proctored on the last day of class, we encourage you to complete your exam application here at least two weeks before arriving in Tampa, FL for your class. This will ensure that we can prepare the necessary testing materials for you to complete your testing.

Be on the lookout one week prior to the start of class for two key things:

  1. A confirmation email from your instructor.
  2. Login instructions for your virtual classroom will be sent the Wednesday prior to the first day of class.
